Peak shopping periods, particularly major promotional campaigns and year-end sales, often bring a sharp increase in traffic to retail websites and applications. Within a short period of time, online platforms may need to process large volumes of product searches, login attempts, shopping-cart activity, and payment transactions simultaneously.
However, not all this traffic comes from genuine customers. Alongside normal shopping activity, retail platforms also receive automated traffic generated by bots. The ability to distinguish legitimate activity from abnormal behavior therefore becomes particularly important, helping retailers identify risks that could affect customer accounts, transactions and the continuity of online sales operations.
Traffic Surges and Potential Cybersecurity Risks
To identify potential risks within the traffic reaching an online platform, retailers first need to understand the nature of the activity taking place. One important factor is bot traffic. Bots are software programs designed to perform certain tasks automatically on websites or applications without direct user interaction.
Bot traffic does not necessarily represent a cybersecurity risk. Legitimate bots may help search engines update website information, monitor system availability, or automate certain operational tasks. Malicious bots, by contrast, are designed or controlled to carry out harmful activities such as testing login credentials, taking over customer accounts, testing payment-card information, collecting data without authorization or generating high volumes of requests that disrupt system availability.
Based on this distinction, retailers can consider traffic across two main categories: legitimate traffic and potentially harmful traffic.

During the peak shopping period from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday, 2025, Radware reported that malicious bot traffic accounted for 43% of total traffic across the e-commerce websites it protected, compared with 46% from human shoppers. At one multinational retailer, account takeover activity increased by more than five times, while payment-card testing activity rose by approximately fifteen times compared with the previous shopping season. These figures show that retailers need to do more than simply handle higher traffic volumes. They also need to identify abnormal activity within that traffic so that potential risks can be assessed and addressed in a timely manner. This provides a foundation for moving from responding to individual situations toward a more proactive and long-term approach to cybersecurity management.
Maintaining Cybersecurity Capabilities Throughout Sales Operations
The cybersecurity needs of a retail business do not remain static over time. As the scale of operations, customer behavior, sales models or business campaigns change, the level of risk and the corresponding protection requirements also need to be reassessed and adjusted. For this reason, retailers need more than a monitoring layer that generates alerts. They need to build and maintain a set of cybersecurity capabilities that reflect their current environment, available resources, and level of risk at each stage of operation. These capabilities should include understanding the current security posture, maintaining continuous monitoring and incident validation, coordinating response when necessary, and testing and adjusting security measures based on actual operating conditions.
