Rather than introducing malicious software, attackers are increasingly relying on compromised credentials and access methods that enterprise systems already recognize as legitimate. The same shift is visible in attacks targeting user identities. The Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2025 recorded a 32% increase in identity-based attacks during the first half of 2025. More than 97% involved passwords, primarily through password guessing or the use of exposed credentials. The implication is significant: an intrusion no longer needs to introduce a malicious file or generate an obvious security event to create risk. As malicious activity becomes harder to distinguish from legitimate user behavior, effective detection depends increasingly on how much of the environment an organization can observe — and whether seemingly isolated anomalies can be correlated into a meaningful sequence of activity. **Malware-Free Attacks Blend into Legitimate Activity** Cyberattacks are often associated with obvious signs of compromise: a sudden surge of alerts outside business hours, users losing access, systems being isolated, and IT teams moving into emergency response mode. Many intrusions, however, begin much more quietly. A malware-free attack does not rely on installing or executing malicious software to progress through the environment. Instead, the warning signs often lie in how legitimate accounts, access privileges and existing system capabilities are being used. An account may still be valid. The tool being used may already be approved. The individual actions may not look inherently malicious when viewed in isolation. What matters is whether those signals can be interpreted in context and over time. A login event on its own may be legitimate. A change in access privileges may also have a valid operational reason. The use of a built-in administrative tool is not inherently suspicious either. But when several of these activities occur in an unusual sequence, across related accounts or systems, they may indicate a pattern that requires investigation.
